Four of 2015’s Most Unusual Car Accidents

by | Jan 15, 2016

As 2016 dawns, and most of us are testing the resolve of our resolutions for the new year, let’s take a beat to reflect on the critical car accident events of 2015 to obtain guidance for how to drive safely in the year ahead. Below, we’ve summarized several of 2015’s more unusual car accidents.

The Domino Effect

On Aug. 28, in Cincinnati, three cars ended up stacked on top of each other after a pile up in a sort of layered domino effect. One driver claimed that she was rear-ended while stopped, causing her vehicle to lift up. Although the pile-up demolished the vehicles involved, miraculously, only one individual suffered minor injuries.

A Fatal Ejection onto a Sign

On Oct. 31, in Glendale, Calif., a 20-year-old man flew up onto a freeway sign and died after he sped recklessly down the freeway. His Ford Focus flipped several times, ejecting him onto the sign. Reports say that he had failed to buckle his seatbelt. Just before the fatal incident, he hit another car with three passengers; no one else suffered injuries in that collision. Authorities shut down the southbound lanes of I-5 for hours to investigate the scene. Thousands of motorists witnessed the upsetting incident.

Corvette Flips into Residential Yard

On Nov. 21, in South Richmond, Va., a Corvette sped through a residential neighborhood, struck a curb, flipped into the air and sailed across three yards before it finally landed upside down in a yard. The driver, who was ejected from the vehicle, later succumbed to his injuries while one passenger was also thrown from the car. A second passenger sustained injuries as well.

A witness stated that the Corvette demolished several bushes as it flipped, leaving debris, including one of its tires, scattered across yards in its wake.

Driving up a Pole

In Youngstown, Ohio, on Dec. 10, a car drove up a utility pole, getting stuck at nearly a 90-degree angle. The mother claimed that she took her eyes off the road and turned around for a moment to hand her hungry toddler a snack. The car landed on a guide wire.

The woman successfully exited her vehicle to call for help, and no one was injured. Two wreckers worked together to remove the vehicle from the perpendicular position. The utility company also responded to the scene to repair the electrical damages.
